Kris and I celebrate our 25th anniversary this year. We are well traveled thanks to Uncle Sam. We cherish our time at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge the most. Comments:Without a doubt my tour as Operations officer/Deputy commander of the 81SPS was the crown jewel of my AF career. The men and women(officers and enlisted) were hands down the Best in the USAF, in fact you proved it in 1986; selected as the number second best SPS (you were really the best, but politics reared its ugly head); you did again in 1987 and in 1988 you were the Best in USAFE. You established the standard which no other unit has achieved. Ltc. Towns and I really appreciated the hard work and committment, not to mention the long hours that each of you devoted to moving the Sq. from the bottom position within the Air Force SP Squadrons to the pinnacle, in just 4 months. I could mention names, but I will not because it would be unfair since I would not have the space to name each person. I discovered this site accidently, but am so glad that I did; it has given me the opportunity to THANKS to all.

Comments: First, Great Site! thanks Eric! Bentwaters was my first assignment in the USAF. And my favorite. Had my share of problems but did my 20 and retired as a MSgt. Live and learn. I worked in transportation for 1 day at Minot (they saw my driving record and gave me the boot), food service at Minot (they don't look at your driving record when they make you a cook), Information Systems, Personnel Systems. As a civilian, I worked for the Navy for a couple years. I now work for the police department at a local college. I can't believe there aren't more pix from our D Flight. I would love to hear from (or about) some of the people I worked with: Chuck Jezewski, Jim Teague, Pat Cioppa, Tuna Fortunato, Chucky Glover, Jim Lewis, Hank Medina, John Krienen, John Sterno, Squilman, Hove, Lori Bouen, Shroyer, Bubba and Ruthie, there are so many... Comments: Lived in Woodbridge then moved to Felixstowe for the rest of the tour. Tranfered to Cannon AFB, NM, Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, Bein Hoa, Vietnam, Zweibrucken AFB, Germany, Ellsworth AFB, SD, Kefalivik NAS, Iceland, Rickenbacker AFB, Ohio, where I retired in l979. Sold cars for 20 years. Currently in Mattoon, Il living on my Miliary Pension, Social Security and my good looks. My Flight Chief was TSgt Travis (Reverend) and SSgt Shively (who didnt like me). I was the Com/Plotter. I had a good time while at Woodbridge, however, spent most of the time looking for the plug so I could sink the Island (hee hee). My most memorable moment was when President Kennedy got shot. I was in Pub in Felixstowe playing darts. Everyone in the Pub was crying. Very Very Sad. Seriously, the only thing I didnt like was the weather. The other thing I remember was that the only way you could get on a SATeam, was you had to know gospel music while TSgt Travis was Flight Chief. Needless to say, I really brushed up in that area. How about MSgt Whitson? Nice guy. Everytime Travis would give me extra duty, I'd go to Whitson and get out of it. Pretty sad what happened to him. I guess he retired as a TSgt after he got back to the states. Gotta lot of stories. Be nice to hear from some of ya.......A1C Gary Jones............

I worked as a desk sgt most of the time for TSGT Coco, who, incidentally, died a few months ago. He was amazing! In retrospect, it was great and I probably would have stayed in the AF if I could have stayed there. Revisited to base in 2000, but it was pretty disappointing to see the changes. Ipswich was great however. Lived on base. Comments: Lived in the barracks with roommate Louis Wartman, from Covington, KY. Also played on the base tennis team.

I almost died of Carbon Monoxide posining my first night on post. Special Post in the WSA when they were installing SPCDS. Bad Age ground heater. The area Sup pulled me out of the Cinder block tower. Yes those of you who remenber that was me. I remember drinking at the Green Man PUB that was run by a old Spitefire Pilot who fought in the Battle of Britian. The running BUCk of course and a few other pubs. I remember making a run to London to Get MacDonalds for a bunch of Guys in the Barracks. 120 mile round trip for a Big Mac. I was assigned to KKMC in Saudi during Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990 and who do I run into a bunch of SPs assign to bentwaters including a few of the Guys I served with as an airman.

Comments: My stay with the 81st SPS was one of the best times in my life. Started out with B Flight Security at BW, then to A Flight LE and finished my tour in the USAF with Security Police Investigations. I remember LtCol Gallager as my first commander, Capt Maurice Rheume (much beloved by the troops, hah, hah) and finally Major Robert Peel, a descendant of the founder of the British Bobbies. Was good friends with Spanky Clay, Jack Landman, and Chuck Turner. LE Flight Chief was SSgt Robbie Robinson. NCOIC of SP Investigations was SSgt Mike Gibbons and I worked with Sgt "Whitey" White at SPI. Captain Reeder was our OIC at the time. I married an English girl, Katie Roche, who worked in the finance department but the marriage ended when we returned to the states (surprise!). I have exchanges emails with a couple of folks over the years but have lost track of most. I hope to read and/or hear from some of you in the future. Knew that humpin' the ramp wasn't for me and went to K-9 within 1st 7 months on base. Married a Scots lady from Edinburgh (now divorced), returned to Wisc in 69 and was civilian until 72 when I reentered AF in Personnel field and was assigned to Scott AFB IL. Married an AF lady in 74 while @ Scott and was reassigned to Lakenheath same yr. Returned to McConnell AFB KS in 81 & retired from there in 89. Now working with the Army in Alaska. I always think of Woodbridge as the best assignment of my AP/SP career.This must be in part because I was (were'nt we all?) younger then and had less responsibilities. Also, the pound went alot further, even with less pay, than it does now. I get back to the UK about every 5 years. I'm sure the English experience was alot different depending on whether you were single/married while there. Also, whether your spouse was American or English (or in my case Scottish).I don't think the flt chiefs had as much fun as the troops. I don't look back on alerts or spit shining boots w/fondness (hence the K-9 choice) I do miss the rainy weather (doesn't rain much in Alaska). I would have retired in the UK except my American spouse wasn't as thrilled living there after 7 years at the 'Heath. Would like to hear from former K-9 handlers from WB. Mike Cummings, Vince Rios, Jack Keane, Robbie Hornbeck, Robert Muszynski, Ray Ayers, George Martin, and the guys from K-9 who PCSd in 67 and names I don't remember but worked with for a short time when I started in the section and they were leaving.

I roomed with John Daly on Bentwaters. Some of the guys in K-9 on Woodbridge were, Vincent Rios from Kansas City, Kansas now working for the telephone company. Charles E. Morton now in Shawnee,Ok is a county sheriff. Peterson was his roommate. Jan Eachus was really on the ball and I would like to hear what he is doing now. Mike Cummings was from Dearborn, Mi and I'm here nearby in Garden City , Mi as I write this but will be moving permanently to Sun City , AZ this fall. Lived at the Saxmundum housing area my least year and half, after living in Campsea Ashe, and laxfield past Framlingham. Comments: MSgt John D Faulk, Ed Rose, and Albert Holmquest were my flight chiefs. One name i can truly remember is Bob Lantzy, who was an E-3 and later became an officer, whom I had the pleasure of being the first one whom he re-enlisted at Lackland where I was an instructor. I was promoted to SSgt while there, as I indicated before, could not have asked for a better assignment. Did not do the London night lite, but saw a lot of the country on days off.

SAC took me Back to 351st SPG in late 1983. Vacationed in Greece 1986-94 7276 SPS, no planes, runway, WSA or NMSA, lovely beach though!

Gabby Hayes, we called him Elmer Fudd (the cartoon character) cause that's exactly who he sounded like. Who else can I remenber on flight: Steve Defalco, Chuck Vasi, Big Jim Banks, Iceman, Steve Perkins, Jim Barnes (Barney, Driver, last but not least the Texas duo: Mex, Jesus. Naturally their were other Looney Tunes too numerous to mention such as Fugalslang (NCOIC) and Capt "Fast Eddie" Drury. I'm still married to that pretty lil girl Sharon from Felixstowe 38 yrs now. Wrecked my MG Midget within a month of ownership and got done by the Brits for Dangerous Driving! Still remember the wreck of the month near the base entrance complete with scoreboard broken out by number of fatalities/accidents, etc. neatly by squadron. Came back after discharge as civilian worked as manager of the Audio/Photo Club. Really miss my life in Suffolk, England and all the great people I met, Brits and Yanks alike. Comments: These were the good old days when mass loading nearly 100 F4s at the twins proved the cops were the most talented folks on the planet. It was also a special period because we were a major part of the change from the Phantoms to the Warthogs. There are reasons why the 81st garnered Best in the Air Force during this period - whether you were LE, security, K-9 or overhead, very seldom does such a talented group of folks get together to accomplish great things. Of the tons of memorabilia I collected over the years, I still give pride-of-place to the 30mm dummy rounds given as promotional items by visiting A-10 contractors, inscribed with a lot of the names of the folks assigned to the 81st SPS over the years - a testimonial to just how great a group we had during the period & how many fond memories still remain.

Been to Bitburg and Fairchild, but nothing can compare to Bentwaters! Many great friends and memories. I remember when I first arrived, there was no room for me in the cop dorm, so I spent 7 months living in the AGS dorm right behind the cop dorm. I loved watching everyone get recalled for a 30-30 from my window, but that soon ended when I got moved over. Roomed with Rich Butrimas, Marty, and Steve May, until Steve and I moved off base with Rodger Martin (K-9). Lots of parties in Felixstowe and great memories of Steve and I tormenting the security guys; sneaking up on them and scaring the crap out of them during mid-shift. Great memories with Bart Chilton, Danny Frye, Steve, Rodger, Jim Maher, and Terry Huff - skinning dipping in the North Sea at 1 AM! COLD!!

Gil, Charlie, Woodie, Jeff, Sid, Nicky D, Bear, Biscuit, Cajun Bill, Larry Lee, Ron, even you Melissa, you little monkey, are sorely missed. Gil, you were my demented big brother, remember my ass whipping? Of course you do. How bout the budgie Charlie taped to his rotating globe? Remember all the times we had to clean his room before we could have a party? KFC bones in his dresser, candy under his mattress, all the sign/countersigns he'de scribble up and down his arms and neglect to wash off. Jesus, those were our glory days. I'll never forget our ride in the Maxi-pad, looking for a @#%$! ferret. Nor am I likely to forget the infamous oil party, or the trip to Denmark, so much fun... I hope this finds all my old brothers and sisters alive and kicking. I'm about sick of WV. Probably go back to the UK in a few years, for good. Take care all.

Sawyer and stayed for a little less than a year before separating. The runway at BW was being revamped when I arrived, and it was a quiet summer. I worked for (then) MSgt. Jim Flynn, who I can recall vividly to this day. Other notables were David Hahn, Bruce Rittman, Steve Lane, Mike Bourke, Tony Nau... I also remember Morton, Teague, Roberts, Carter in training, and a red headed Brennan, as well. Ring any bells, anyone? Funny how it sticks after all these years. I lived at Poplar cottage in Friston with Mike Bourke, and I recall having to hitchhike to the base at 10:00 at night my last few weeks of work. It was slightly unnerving for a city boy to find himself walking through the English countryside alone in the dark, but what a memory. Great site, and thanks. Thanks Kevin!

I have great memories of the bases and some of the people i worked with. The k-9 section was small: Cuba, chris gregory, John costabilemmax ballew,a.d. reader and I. I remember working with Tsgt whiteheads crew, they were very supportive, I remember Lt col Halt wanting to go out and do searches with us, where does that happen? I was a season ticket holder at Ipswich town FC,supported Essex county cricket club, and competed in Bodybuilding comps up and down the u.k.I Reteired out of the Navy as an air traffic controller,I did not like it,I spent 5 years in NYC trying to be an actor,gaining experience on the stage . I found out actors are a dime a dozen. I've been working in the business of corrections for almost 9 years. What i know now is,the people i was lucky enough to be around both on and off base during my tours at Torrejon A.B,and Bentwaters A,B.. are the best i've had to work and socialize with. As an AC3 ran the AP armory for two years assisted training with weapons training, was in the armory when we replaced the m2 carbine with the AR-15. had to test fire 200 of them, and did not have the proper cleaning solution. what a mess. Carl E. Russell, 11/14/17, I was A/E squadron and later CAMRON as a weapons mechanic. After leaving active duty I joined the 161st SPF at Sky Harbor ANG base located in Phoenix. I spent 8 years there as the NCOIC of training. I retired in 1963 as the wing historian. I would like to let you know that there is an 81st Tactical Fighter Wing association. We have 143 members and hold a reunion each year in various locations, including Bentwaters. If any of your members are interested you are invited to join our association.
