On my reenlistment, I cross-trained into EOD. I retired in 1997 and moved to Denver, Colorado where I now work as an Unexploded Ordnance Supervisor for an environmental company (we clean up UXO from closed military installations). Sure do miss the Running Buck and touring England on my motorcycle (Zeke and Bill Espieg were my riding buddies).

We lived at both Woodbridge and Bentwaters in our 3 years there. "Chappie" James worked for my father and lived across the street from us at Bentwaters. Robin Olds took over when we left. My mother & I visited the bases in the late 1980's and very little had changed. Wished we had taken some pictures/plaques from the old Officer's Club with my father's picture & name. When I arrived I Lived in Ipswich then to Saxmundum and then to Rendelsham Base housing. Comments: While surfing the net I saw the 81st SPS Home page. I noticed the "B" Flight Group Photo and saw that this was my flight. I am in the back row next to the last man on the right. This photo was takien during a 3 day joint exercise with the 1st SF BN 10th SFG(ABN)1st SF, which this group of Airmen won the award on the 15th day of April 1983. I also worked as NCOIC of Pass and Registration. I remember Maj Zickler, CMSGT John Hill, Swatoy, Bernie Erb, TSgt George, Jim Penninston, MSgt Lumbardo, TSgt White, MSgt Bob Ball, Ron Faile, Donnie Rushlow and many more can't name them all. Wish we could turn the clock back but those are memories that each and everyone of us will cherish forever. I also New Col Halt and the Rendelsham Forest UFO Story on Woodbridge.

Spent the entire tour at RAF Bentwater. First lived in Felixstowe and then moved to Wickham Market. Comments: Interesting three years of our lives. Started out working the "Alert" area with the F-101's. After spending much waisted time walking the perimeter got a chance to work in the Investigations Branch of L/E. After my NCOIC SSgt Jesse McMullen rotated to the states I took over as NCOIC and worked out of the OSI building. We had a Lt Barrett, I believe his name was and I can remember him because he would make me rewrite my reports a number of times before he'd let Operations submit them. I guess he made me a better writer. We adopted my son while in England when he was only 3 months old and he's now 44. That's a long time ago. After spending our 3 years at Bentwaters we went to McConnell AFB, KS to walk around the Titan II missle sites. Not having a love of walking in the dark in the heart of Kansas, I entered the life of an AF Recruiter in Brockton Massachusetts. Four years later off to Binh Thuy VNAF Vietnam after two weeks of combat training at Bullus. Came back to Duluth AFB, Minn to the snow and cold. While attending the NCO Academy at Hamilton AFB in the mid of winter, my conversations with the family was like get us the (sp) heck out of here. I was enjoying breaking bread and drinking wine on a grassy knol while they had snow half way up the picture window. Consequently, back to recruiting service in Hartford and Milfrod CT. After another successful and happy 4 years the AF in their infinite wisdom sent us off to Minot AFB, ND. Back to the snow and cold. Three months later they said off to Germany. I said no way, Jose. Retired and moved to Arizona where the temperature hover at 110 degrees on this June day. Thank GOD for air conditioning. Finished another career in sales and retired again. Spend our time now working with a non-profit charity and loving it. If you get a chance google me and send some Email. Always nice to hear from old friends.

In the early 80s I worked security at Beccles Heliport guarding S.61 helicopters. We had a corner of the airfield where a member of the Womans Royal Air Force was murdered in WW2, that none of our patrol dogs would go near at night! If you tried to force them they would go crazy! We also thought the Helo hanger to be haunted as lights would turn themselves on and off. Any way, enough of the ramblings of this "Bloke" Fab site. Health and happiness to all envolved.

Comments: I was 17 when I arrived, and had THE time of my life, especially at The Running Buck! We used to go to Great Yarmouth and party at The Senator (was a disco) and in Ipswich at The Bandbox! London at least once or twice a month. I took the Hovercraft quite a few times from Dover to Calais and then on to Paris! Went TDY to Avianno Italy for three weeks and extended the good times there! I worked "D" Flight at Woodbridge and Flight Chief was TSgt David Nagy. He was a very squared away former Marine and we all worked hard at keeping the high standards he expected. I'd love to hear from any of you who served there and especially to those who lived in the barracks with me. Didn't we have the greatest time!? G. Ernest Govea, 8/9/17, I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters from Dec. '69 to Dec. '71. Having arrived there after a year in Vietnam, Bentwaters was like paradise. I went from a hot, humid climate to a cold, snowy one. I had just turned 20 years of age and quickly submerged myself into the English culture. I used to really enjoy going to the Running Buck, Christ Chruch Park, the Hidleberg restaurant, and other such places in Ipswitch. I also enjoyed going to Felixstowe where my girlfriend lived, and spent a lot of time in both places. I traveled to a lot of places in England and made a trip to Scotland with my good buddy Robert Glass and another to Wales with my good buddy Jim Baker. I went to London with buddies but just a few times, I preferred the country side to the big city. One night we were told to go pack our duffel bags and get ready to be deployed to some hot spot where a problem was developing. I was gung ho and ready for some action but it fizzled out and we didn't have to go. Another time one of our F-4s went down in a cow pasture, taking out one cow and we used to have to go out there several miles from the base to guard the site. Later a Scottish contractor was hired to dig the wreckage out of the ground. I found the duty to be easy except that sometimes that cold wind would come up off the North Sea and cut through us like a cold knife. When I first arrived a lot of guys were writing to their congressmen because we had no hot water in which to shower and the chow hall served pretty much nothing but ground meat. Sometimes we'd get meatloaf four days in a row. About six months later things improved. We got hot water and a variety of food. I've got nothing but fond memories of Bentwaters. Did a lot of 'choir' practice with Tom Giblin, Vincencs, Bruce Walker, Paulson, Jeff McDonald and wife Kelly, Mark Glen Coleman, a bunch of wild dayshift guys. Hey, who remembers going to the Nurses dance in Ipswich and getting caught after hours climbing the wall to escape? I know who was there. FUN.

Bobby Hyland, John "Jack" Reardon and Teddy Drews worked in the "foxhole." MSgt Bill Evanow was the WSC "Elf God." Worked with Mike Scully and Kevin Scales up in the Plans office. Got married in the BW chapel. Also remember Capt. Weaver, Capt. Ron Heil, and Lt. Vaught, Steve "Crash" Smith, Mark Ardelt, John Buldis, Vince Eubanks, Bruce Koneckni, Steve Bustemante (roommate on WB), Stew Givens, Steve Butler, Dennis Huff and SO many more. There I did security and law enforcement work... became a desk sergeant. I left active duty as a Senior Airman in 1992 and attended the University of California, San Diego. I graduated in 1996 with a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering. Now I work for General Electric (GE) and live in Irvine, CA.

Woodbridge or Bentwaters? stationed at Bentwaters Comments: was stationed there straight out of tech school. lots of great memories. way to many friends to even begin to start listing. counted and packaged every @#%$! bullet in all 3 armories on the bases and shipped them out before base closure. if i hadn't helped close the base i would probably still be there. daughter was born at lakenheath. went to Bitburg, Germany which closed in 94. they tried to get me to help them in their armory and i said no thanks. currently a corporal with the sheriffs dept. in Kingman, AZ working in a detention center. this site brings back alot of good memories.

My father was an AP at Bentwaters where he met my (step) mom Janet Philips. He used to be a K9 handler & trainer. He's in a nursing home in Ohio with an alzheimer like ailment.
